Shape - independent scaling of excitonic confinement in realistic quantum wires

چکیده

The scaling of exciton binding energy in semiconductor quantum wires is investigated theoretically through a non-variational, fully three-dimensional approach for a wide set of realistic state-of-the-art structures. We find that in the strong confinement limit the same potential-to-kinetic energy ratio holds for quite different wire cross-sections and compositions. As a consequence, a universal (shapeand composition-independent) parameter can be identified that governs the scaling of the binding energy with size. Previous indications that the shape of the wire cross-section may have important effects on exciton binding are discussed in the light of the present results. 78.66.Fd, 73.20.Dx Typeset using REVTEX

Microwave–Assisted Hydrothermal Synthesis and Optical Characterization of SnO2 Nanoparticles

Semiconductor nanoparticles exhibit size dependent properties due to quantum confinement effect that are not present in their bulk counterparts. In this work, extremely fine and pure SnO2 nanoparticles of ~1.1 nm size were synthesized by a solution process, in which amorphous precipitate of SnO2 was crystallized by microwave heating. The particles sizes varied from ~1.1 to ~2.7 nm. By XRD analy...

Exciton dephasing via phonon interactions in InAs quantum dots: Dependence on quantum confinement

We report systematic measurements of the dephasing of the excitonic ground-state transition in a series of InGaAs/GaAs quantum dots having different quantum confinement potentials. Using a highly sensitive fourwave mixing technique, we measure the polarization decay in the temperature range from 5 to 120 K on nine samples having the energy distance from the dot ground-state transition to the we...

Universal dispersion of surface plasmons in flat nanostructures

Dimensionality has a significant impact on the optical properties of solid-state nanostructures. For example, dimensionality-dependent carrier confinement in semiconductors leads to the formation of quantum wells, quantum wires and quantum dots. While semiconductor properties are governed by excitonic effects, the optical response of metal nanostructures is dominated by surface plasmons. Here w...

Nonlinear optical effects in strain-induced laterally ordered (InP)2/(GaP)2 quantum wires.

The nonlinear optical properties of a ~InP!2/~GaP!2 bilayer superlattice structure have been examined with linearly polarized cathodoluminescence spectroscopy. Transmission electron microscopy showed a composition modulation with a period of ;800 Å along the @110# direction, which occurs spontaneously during the growth, resulting in coherently strained quantum wires. The strong excitation depen...

Crossover between the Dense Electron-hole Phase and the Bcs Excitonic Phase in Quantum Dots

Second order perturbation theory and a Lipkin-Nogami scheme combined with an exact Monte Carlo projection after variation are applied to compute the ground-state energy of 6 ≤ N ≤ 210 electron-hole pairs confined in a parabolic two-dimensional quantum dot. The energy shows nice scaling properties as N or the confinement strength is varied. A crossover from the high-density electron-hole phase t...
